Government intends to pay its employees to “volunteer” for the 2010 Olympic
Winter Games;
AND WHEREAS this action
creates an “off the books” taxpayer-funded subsidy for the Games;
AND WHEREAS this action would
see government employed “volunteers” paid according to their prevailing pay
scale,
rather than according the value of work performed;
AND WHEREAS this action is
detrimental to the spirit of volunteerism generally, and would be stressful for
unpaid
volunteers working alongside paid “volunteers”;
AND WHEREAS this action
creates an unfair disadvantage for government employees that do not live and
work
in the area of the Games;
AND WHEREAS this action
prejudices non-government employees and creates an expectation for local
governments
and the private sector to pay their employees to “Volunteer”;
AND WHEREAS the Games’
Organizing Committee has secured nearly one-half of the required complement of
volunteers in the first two weeks of volunteer recruitment;
